Lately I have been working on Virtualizing Solaris workloads on to SPARC T4 servers. The attached presentation is an attempt to summarize lessons learned from several attempts to ”get it right” . Its also an attempt to paint the big picture of the environment thats needed outside the SPARC T4 servers to enable as flexible use as possible of the Virtual Solaris Machine.

Unix 40 år

Om någon har missat det så är faktiskt Unix Operativsystemet 40 år denna månaden (beroende lite på när man räknar).

Och IEEE har skrivit en bra artikel om hur unix kom till med en del ganska roliga anekdoter om födelsen. Finns här.

Hope you are enjoying a great Summer even though once again the weather is letting us down here in the UK. Sad!

The bad weather did not stop the good news coming out at least for some of us.

Apple released their Mac OS X Lion. For this we have two books coming out - Mac OS X Lion: The Missing Manual and Mac OS X Lion Pocket Guide, the latter being available now as an ”Early Release” eBook, so let me know if you want a copy. Both books should be available in September.
Also I just learnt that our Velocity Conference is coming to Berlin in November. Looking for an opportunity to talk, submit a proposal before August 9th.

LibreOffice 3.3.2 and FreeBSD 8.2

I was positively surprised at how fast its possible to build LibreOffice and its prerequisite OpenJDK6 JAVA runtime these days. Compile time for JAVA and LibreOffice is about an hour each on a 3 Ghz quad core X64 class CPU. These builds used to take 4 to 8 hours, so it was not something that you could kick off in an evening.

Now that it can be built in an evening, thanks to parallel make software and multicore CPU’s , I can update these builds on a regular basis.
